I recently encountered a problem with my Outlook mobile app where I’m unable to access my emails. It happens every now and then. I’ll see a “Please wait while we download your messages” alert come up when I launch the app and it stays there no matter how long I wait. It seems a lot of people have experienced this problem. Luckily, there’s an easy fix.
The problem occurs at random and there are time when restarting the app or the phone won’t make it go away. Not even uninstalling and reinstalling the Outlook app can guarantee a fix. I’ve tried leaving the app for an hour and it has continued to display the “Please wait while we download your messages” alert. But the app isn’t completely disabled when it’s in this state; it’s still possible to compose and send emails through the app.
It appears only Android mobile users are affected by this bug.
This is a known issue but Microsoft doesn’t have an official remedy for it. Fortunately, Microsoft Answers forum user Andrea Calaon suggested the following fix, which I’ve tested and it has works.
Just send yourself an email.
Try sending an e-mail to the account you manage through Outlook for Android. When the e-mail arrives the updating system goes out of the freeze … and you get back the list of e-mails in the incoming folder back.

Hi Spandas, thanks for re-posting this solution. I had the ‘Please wait while we update …’ message ???? and repeated all of your attempts at a fix before Googling and finding your post.
