Microsoft has released Windows 10 Mobile Build 14267, which doubles the number of apps you can run simultaneously in RAM before the operating system starts shutting them down in the background. Here are the details.
Build 14267 of the Windows 10 Mobile operating system was recently released to public Windows Insider program participants that are in the Fast Ring. Those users get priority access to Windows builds after they have been approved internally by Microsoft.
While previous versions of Windows 10 Mobile builds could only support eight apps at the same time in multitasking mode, Softpedia has reported that the new version now allows for up to 16 apps to run and sit in a devices’ RAM simultaneously.
This will be welcome news for people who jump from app to app constantly, such as those who actively share photos or content on different social media platforms. There’s no word on whether Microsoft enabling this new multitasking feature would eat away at battery life. No doubt the vendor will get plenty of feedback about this from its wide network of Fast Ring testers.
Other improvements in the new build for Windows 10 Mobile include:
- The ability for Cortana to listen and search for the song that’s playing (essentially the same thing as the Shazam app)
- Word Flow in the address bar in the Microsoft Edge browser on the phone
- Open InPrivate tabs more easily in Microsoft Edge
- Improved download prompts in Microsoft Edge
- Added features to messaging and Skype
Windows 10 Build 14267 is only available for Fast Ring Insiders with Lumia 950 950 XL and 550 handsets.

Windows phone has had song recognition built-in for five years or more and it has always been part of Cortana.
True multitasking is being able to process data stream from multiple sources concurrently, not just being able to store them in ram.
