Talking to adolescents about pornography can be a tough subject to tackle, as it’s “the sex talk” on steroids, but nowadays an important one. Marriage counsellor, psychotherapist, and author Dr Marty Klein offers up three points you’ll definitely want to include in the conversation.
- It’s not real — it’s a bunch of professional actors and actresses who follow a written script and play characters, just like in other movies.
- It’s made for adults who have some life experience with sex, or at least with emotions and a few relationships. That means it uses certain kinds of codes that adults understand and kids don’t. Like a woman having sex with the pizza delivery guy represents that she’s horny, not that most woman are going to do that.
- It doesn’t show a lot of what makes sex worth doing — the connection with another person that makes the whole physical thing way more meaningful and enjoyable. And it doesn’t show that sex can be relaxed rather than frantic.

Not real? Well, they’re not wearing fake genitals or using CGI.
The industry has evolved and spawned different genres such as “erotic porn” or similar, a glossy, photographic quality hybrid of soft and hard. No story except for the “situation”. The pace is less frantic, more romantic. Other porn tries to reveal the actual social connections between the porn stars to emphasize real-life facts such as their first time together on camera etc.
It’s the porn industry, they know exactly what they’re doing. They’re not stuck in the 90s.
A better approach might be to tell teens the truth. That porn can be awesomely addictive, it will get even more so the more virtual our displays get, an endless source of stimulating material with minimal negative consequences. You might even learn a few tricks. But like drugs, too much of a good thing is kinda sad. For your own mojo’s sake it’s best left as an occasional thing, hardly ever, or not at all.
“Realistic” might have been a better word to use.
…and that’s why the midget is covered in honey while being spanked with a paddle.
