See More Honest Headlines With Downworthy For Chrome

It’s true the internet has become a lot more hungry for page clicks and as you’d expect, this has changed they way writers craft article headlines. Hacking into said sites and altering the titles to their articles is far too extreme an option, you could install Downworthy, a Chrome extension that reworks headlines on the fly.

As the extension’s description states, it “replaces hyberbolic headlines … with a slightly more realistic version”, with examples including switching the word “literally” with “figuratively” and the phrase “will blow your mind” with “might perhaps mildly entertain you for a moment”. The extension contains many more alternate words and expressions, a full list of which is available on the project’s website.

At the moment, Chrome is the only browser supported, though Firefox and Safari versions are planned.
