Stumps are not only ugly, but they’re a tripping hazard. If you leave them high enough, you have a solid seat, but most homeowners want them out. There are two ways to remove a stump: one takes time, the other takes money.
The cheap and easy way to remove a tree stump is to use a tree stump remover like Spectracide, which is potassium nitrate (also known as saltpeter). This chemical causes the stump to rot at a much faster pace than normal which will allow you to tear it out.
Use a 2.5cm auger bit and drill deep holes into the top and side of the stump. Pour the stump remover into the holes and top it off with water which activates the product. Keep children and animals away from the stump using chicken wire or some type of cover. Then wait. It can take months for the stump to break down, depending on how old and how large the stump is.
Rent a power stump grinder if you are short on time. These are big and heavy machines, but they make short work of stubborn stumps by using carbide tipped teeth to instantly shred a stump.
Stump grinders cost $100-$200 per day, and you’ll need a truck with a ramp to haul it home. Many rental shops will pickup and deliver for an additional fee, which can be well worth it to avoid the hassle of transporting.

If you’re going to pay 100-200 anyway, you might as well pay someone to do it for you – it’s about the same price.
This stuff is a crock, it may work on American “hardwoods” but it sure as shit doesn’t work on Aussie timber. How do I know? I have my own tree removal company. That stump pictured is about $80 depending on access.
Are you in Sydney?
Newcastle, $80 an hour is the average rate. Ring around some local companies. Make sure you know where your services are, Telstra, gas etc.
Yeah dont want to remove the internet as well as a stump.
We always used to just burn them out with a carefully placed and tended fire. The fire would travel down and burn the roots out too. Of course this was on acreage so we didn’t have to worry about smoking out the neighbours.
We used to burn them out sixty years ago, but after one burning stump caused a grass fire a week later in the middle of the night. The local council imposed a ban on stump burning unless some one remained there with a water tank until the ground cooled plus a thirty foot bare earth policy around the stump.
Hey isnt Saltpeter one of the things in Gun Powder?
Gun powder works great for removing stumps too. just dont stand over the holes you augered and filled with powder when you light it…
If you add a few other ingredients to the mix you can throw a match on it and break it up rather quickly.
My friend used to remove them with a mixture of fertiliser and diesel.
If you did that now, you would quickly find yourself getting some unwanted attention.
