We often hear about the potential for big data to provide fresh insights by linking separate data sources. But that doesn’t mean those sources can’t have an obvious connection.

Business Insider reports on a big data project at IBM that linked the account services database of upcoming projects with the HR records of existing skills. As IBM executive Brenda Dietrich explained, that means Big Blue can see if “six months from now, do we have enough java programmers in Bangalore, enough [technicians] in Utah, enough database administrators in Zurich? We can start hiring and training in advance.”
That’s not a surprising outcome; if anything, the shock is that IBM wasn’t doing that already. And while it may not be good news for the staff reportedly set to get the chop, it reminds us that big data isn’t always about hidden secrets. Often it’s about making evident connections.
