The shift to email isn’t great news if you’re the national postal organisation, but Australia Post isn’t entirely stuck in the backwaters. New data reveals that an increasing number of its customers are using smart phones to access its service.
Fran Foo at AustralianIT reports that currently 9% of visitors to Australia Post’s online sites utilise a smart phone. That’s still a relatively small percentage, but it’s up on 3% the year before, and Australia Post executive Brady Jacobsen predicts that it will be a 50:50 split within five years. Australia Post already offers an iPhone app for searching postcodes and calculating postage rates and has plans for an Android version, though it’s decided against BlackBerry for the moment.
Statistics on how Australians utilise mobile phones often appear contradictory; we favour games over productivity when it comes to apps, but in browsing terms entertainment rates much lower.
