Engage in Divergent Thinking

Often, creative blocks arise when we feel confined by a narrow perspective. Engage in divergent thinking by brainstorming a wide range of ideas without judgement or self-censorship. Use mind maps, lists, or freewriting exercises to explore numerous possibilities, even if they seem far-fetched initially. This process allows your mind to wander and discover unconventional connections that may lead to breakthroughs.

“I think one of the most important things to understand about creative blocks is that often, we run with the instinct that our creative ideas, if they don’t tumble out immediately, will not come at all. We imagine that over a protracted period, that our best stuff arrives early, and that eventually what’s left over when it starts to get really hard to work through the creative process is less good,” said Adam.

“There are a lot of studies that do this. If you give people a task, say, come up with as many interesting uses for a paperclip as you can. If you ask people, do you think your best ideas will come in the first 10, or in the 11th to 20th ideas? Almost everyone’s intuition is the first 10. It does get more difficult because your best ideas, your first ideas, come really easily. But they’re also pretty mundane.”

Engaging in collaborative projects or joining creative communities can provide fresh perspectives and constructive feedback, helping you break through your creative rut. Adam highly recommends collaborating with people from different backgrounds, to ensure a wide range of perspectives are used to overcome roadblocks.

“There are, broadly speaking, three kinds of people on teams, there are people who are alike, and have similar backgrounds, similar disciplines, they think the same way, they may be friends, they may have a lot of demographic overlap. And there’s great value there. Because if you’re doing something, well, it’s amplified by people who are like you. But if you’re stuck, by definition, they’re going to entrench you further, because they’re doing the same thing,” said Adam.

Embrace Constraints

While it may seem counterintuitive, embracing constraints can actually boost your creativity. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by limitless options, set specific boundaries or limitations for your creative project. Working within these confines can push you to think more innovatively and find unique solutions.

Take a Break and Recharge

Sometimes, all you need is a break to recharge your creative batteries. Step away from your work and engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. Go for a walk, indulge in a hobby, or spend time with loved ones. Taking time off allows your mind to rest and rejuvenate, leading to renewed inspiration when you return to your creative endeavours.
