How to Play ‘MultiVersus’ Right Now

MultiVersus is Smash Bros. if Nintendo had the licence to the most iconic non-video game characters of the last few decades that also happen to be owned by Warner Bros. The vagaries of IP law aside, any brawler that lets you pit Batman against Arya Stark is offering a unique experience. If you’re interested in participating in your own matchup between Bugs Bunny and the Iron Giant, you’re in luck: MultiVersus is available to play right now, if you know how to get yourself in the ring.

What’s the deal with MultiVersus?

MultiVersus was first announced in November of 2021, but thanks to extensive leaks and rumours, fans were aware of the game long before its official unveiling. GameInformer even referred to the title as “perhaps one of the year’s worst-kept secrets.” Secret or not, there’s hype for the game, which allows you to choose from 16 characters spanning Warner Brother’s extensive catalogue. Right now, the roster is as follows:

  • The Iron Giant
  • Taz (as in the Tazmanian Devil)
  • Velma
  • Arya Stark
  • Batman
  • Bugs Bunny
  • Finn the Human
  • Garnet
  • Harley Quinn
  • Jake the Dog
  • Reindog
  • Shaggy
  • Steven Universe
  • Superman
  • Tom and Jerry
  • Wonder Woman

The gameplay seems promising: Based on accounts from those with early access, it’s a solid Smash Bros.-alike, complete with unique moves and maps based on the particular sets of skills of its eclectic character roster. You’re able to fight 1v1 and 2v2, or engage in a four-player free-for-all.

How to play MultiVersus right now

MultiVersus is prepping an open beta ready to launch Wednesday, July 27 at 2 p.m. AEST. However, there’s also an early access beta available right now. The easiest way to jump into the early access beta is if you were already a part of the closed alpha, which started back on May 19. You should be able to use the code originally sent to your email address in order to get in. However, if you have no MultiVersus experience yet, that’s ok: You can still jump into the beta today.

To start, create or sign in to a WB Games Account. Then, link that account to your Twitch account. Once connected, find a streamer playing MultiVersus with Twitch Drops enabled for at least one hour. (If you lose track of time, you can check on your progress here.) When the hour is up and you’ve earned your spot, claim it via this link. You’re in!

Alternatively, you can purchase a Founder’s Pack to get into the game immediately. However, they start at $US40 ($56), which might make waiting an hour for a Twitch Drop a bit more enticing.

MultiVersus is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
