Subscribe To A Podcast From The Beginning With Cast Rewinder

I have a bad podcast habit. I keep discovering great, long-running podcasts and downloading their entire backlogs. Right now I’ve queued up 128 episodes of 32 shows. Maybe I should use Cast Rewinder, which sends you one old podcast episode at a time.

Just throw in the RSS feed or the iTunes page (even if you’re on Android), and tell it whether you want new episodes daily, weekly, or something in between. Cast Rewinder (currently in beta) spits out an RSS feed for your time-delayed episodes. Paste that into your podcast player (here’s how).

Now you’ll get the old episodes as if they’re new. If you ever catch up, you can switch over to the “real” podcast.

It’s a cool tool, but it isn’t magic. This American Life only lets you download the latest four episodes, and Cast Rewinder can’t change that. So if you’re worried about episodes disappearing before you catch up, then you should download them the normal way.

But if you want to catch up on 130 episodes of Welcome to Night Vale, one night at a time, then plug it into Cast Rewinder.

Cast Rewinder is an open-source project posted to GitHub, so if you’re a developer, you can install your own version and tweak it as you like.
