Building Systems Without User Research Is A Recipe For Disaster

Wondering why no-one is using that nifty new team Wiki or chatroom? There’s a chance you didn’t check whether it was actually something anyone needed.

Lifehacker’s coverage of Gartner Portals, Content & Collaboration Summit 2014 is presented by the Microsoft Cloud, providing flexible enterprise cloud solutions for business.

Gartner managing VP Susan Landry highlighted that common quandary during this week’s Gartner PCC conference:

If you are creating systems and the people using them have no feeling of involvement and had no input into then, they’re very unlikely to be using them. And if they’re not using them, what’s the point?

This isn’t a one-way street: workers aren’t always good at identifying new opportunities, or spotting the risks inherent in (for instance) simply signing up for a cloud service. But it reminds us that adoption won’t happen just because you put something out there.
