Nite Ize LEDs-Up Your Old Maglites

Maglites are fantastic torches, with a build quality and weightiness that feel just as good as being able to illuminate a dark room. But what if you can swap in an LED bulb yourself and make it even brighter and better? With Nite Ize, you can.

The $US10-$US15ish upgrade consists of an LED bulb and a few fittings to turn your yellowish, loosely focused light into a bright white beam. There are different LED upgrade kits for different Maglites, so make sure you get the correct one. What's neat is that the light isn't just brighter and whiter, LEDs are also more efficient, so your flashlight lasts longer too.

This long as hell YouTube video illustrates how to swap in the light, and how it looks in comparison with the default Maglite. You'll want to skip around, because who has time to watch a 13-minute video about torches?

Ahhh. I love my maglite but I've stopped using it as the kinetically powered led one I have is brighter. Now maybe I'll have a good excuse to whip out that manly piece of metal once again.

I saw the link on Cool Tools last night (no credit? Naughty Jason!) and checked out the price of these locally. I can get a much brighter torch with LiIon battery and charger for about the same price as the replacement bulb. Given the power draw of a decent LED I would expect the souped up MagLite to run for a far shorter time.

We sell these at jaycar (i work at the a'beckett st store) for around $17 :]

    there actually quite good!

AA Maglite is the smallest model they can fit.
