BlackBerry Protect Offers Remote Wipe And Online Backup

BlackBerry has always offered a pretty comprehensive range of backup and remote wipe features, but some of those options haven't been easily available to individual users who aren't connected to a corporate BlackBerry server. The BlackBerry Protect app, which has just been made available to Australian customers, changes that, making it easy to locate (or erase) a lost or stolen BlackBerry device.

Once the app is installed, you can set it up to automatically backup your contacts, text messages, bookmarks and calendars wirelessly on a schedule of your choosing. If you misplace the phone, you can lock or wipe it remotely via the BlackBerry Protect site, and then restore your backed-up data to another device. You can also use the site to locate the phone or display a message on its screen beseeching any good Samaritan who finds it to contact you.

BlackBerry Protect is a free download from BlackBerry App World. The app is currently in beta, but even so it's an obvious essential for any BlackBerry owner.

Google's Android platform offers most of this except the remote wipe service (maybe it handles it with other apps I haven't found yet). Great idea and great that they have finally thought to release it to us poor people so far far away.
