Google’s marching into the future, but sometimes you’re stuck in the recent past with a slow connection or a device chugging along at not-so-modern speed. Luckily, Google still offers its older image search, mobile translator, and text-only cache options — you just have to know where to look.
The Google Operating System blog features 10 Google tools and tweaks for slower internet connections, most of them involving a few settings changes in your account. They work, but when you move between computers, your Google settings (and synced Chrome settings) follow you around. It’s the bookmark-able tools that provide the best value, since your bookmarks can sync too, and you can activate them when you’re feeling the bandwidth pinch.
The most useful, in my humble, utilitarian-minded opinion, is the text-only Google cache search:
www.google.com/search?strip=1&q=cache:www.domain.com
Bookmark that URL with the proper site filled in for www.domain.com
, or, if you’re using Chrome, create a custom search engine for stripped-down pages (similar to the search that turns off Google Instant, another bandwidth-saving idea).
What’s your own preferred web route for when you’re moving kinda slow? We welcome your low-horsepower tips in the comments.
