Gym machines get a bad rap from fitness pros who prefer free weights. And it’s true, many are actually overkill. However, if you’re new to the gym, these seven gym machines are a solid balance.

Workout machines can teach you good form and proper movements for beginners, and you can take that knowledge to free weights later. Plus, if you’re really new, they can be safer to use too. Here are the seven Greatist suggests you try out:

  1. Horizontal Seated Leg Press Machine
  2. Lat Pull-Down Bar
  3. Cable Biceps Bar
  4. Cable Triceps Bar
  5. Chest Press Machine
  6. Hanging Leg Raise
  7. Rowing Machine

Between these, you will exercise all your major muscle groups and even get a cardio workout, while becoming more comfortable in the gym.

  • Horizontal Seated Leg Press Machine could also be called an omni leg press machine.
All the machines are great for beginners. They all should have pictures and instructions on them. Only downside is a lot of the machines don’t have weight values on the weights. They will just say 1, 2, 3, etc.
