Ludicrous job titles sometimes seem like a fact of life in IT. But one title we don’t need to endorse is Chief Internet Of Things Officer.

Gartner analyst Mark Raskino makes the case against the CIOTO in a blog post. As he notes, new C-level roles do emerge regularly: no-one thought about having a chief information officer 40 years ago. However, he classifies CIOTO as a “unicorn” role — one which either never existed or which only a handful of people will ever hold:
As I’ve said before, the internet of things is an internet of products — so I believe that responsibility will fall substantially into product management and other exiting areas — it is not a distinct need.
As Raskino notes, no-one on LinkedIn is yet claiming this title. Hit his post for a discussion of C-level roles that might actually last.
