Killer Interview Question: What Was Your Claim To Fame In Your Previous Role?

This week’s KIQ comes from Hamilton Bradshaw Group CEO and LinkedIn Influencer, James Cann. He believes that if you really want to know someone, you have to catch them off guard. This is exactly what he does when he interviews potential employees. This question is aimed at finding out the candidate’s strengths, but in disguise.

When people go into interviews, they have usually prepared answers for the big questions like “Why should we hire you?” and “What are your biggest weaknesses?”. Cann revealed that in his 30 years’ experience interviewing candidates, he has designed his own set of questions with the aim of throwing interviewees off so their true self comes out.

By asking what a person’s claim to fame in their last job is, Cann is looking to dig deeper and find out what the candidate’s best qualities are, specifically from the perspective of those who have worked with them.

“Here I want to know what you excelled at in your previous role; what would your previous colleagues tell me you were known for? Give me something character building,” he said.
