Manage Your Photography Gear Like A Pro With MyGearVault

iOS: Whether you’re a professional or just a novice with new equipment, photography gear is expensive and it accumulates quickly. MyGearVault helps you keep tabs on all of your equipment in one place.

The app is basically a (free) inventory app that allows you to enter info about your specific type of gear. You can enter your serial number, a description and a photo of the serial number. It also has a feature that alerts you if your stolen equipment is added to the app:

For example, if your camera is stolen, simply click the “stolen” button inside the app and your serial number will be entered into our stolen database. If someone tries to verify your lens as their own, we will be notified.

Of course, this is dependent on the thief actually using this app and verifying stolen equipment, which may not be likely. However, it’s a helpful feature to have just in case.

Be aware, though, you’re sharing data with the app’s developers, and you can check out their full privacy policy here, but here’s some info they shared with us on how they keep your data safe:

We use all of the top security protocols, data is sent to server over a secure https protocol (the same thing used when you’re doing online shopping or logging in to your bank account)… When it comes to the servers, we’re using the service that the likes of Netflix and Airbnb do, plus we never share your data with anyone, what’s in your vault is yours. The other aspect of security is around people getting access to your device. You can secure MyGearVault app with a touch ID or passcode as well as utilise Facebook connect and their robust verification to login.

You could just as easily use any home inventory app to do the job (or you could just keep track of this info on your own). However, the app makes it easy to look up photography equipment specifically, so if you have a lot of gear, it will come in handy. Currently, there’s no Android version but Encircle is a similar option on Android. It allows you to add items to a general home inventory list, and you can still input serial numbers and photos.
