Add A PIN Lock To Windows 10 To Make Your Microsoft Account More Secure

You’re probably used to logging in to your Windows computer with a password. However, if you’re using a Microsoft account to log in to Windows, a PIN lock may be a more secure option.

As tips blog Make Tech Easier points out, if you’re using a Microsoft account to log in to your device, you’re entering a password that can be used to gain access to every single aspect of your account, including other devices and web services.

However, by setting up a PIN lock, you can unlock a single device without routinely using your account password. A PIN is only used to unlock the device you activate it on. That means that if someone glances over your shoulder and sees the PIN you used to unlock your laptop, they will only have access to that one laptop, not your entire Microsoft account. For this reason alone, it may be worth using a PIN instead of a password.

To activate a PIN on Windows 10, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Search for “Sign-in options.”
  3. Under PIN click “Add.”
  4. Create a PIN.

After this point, you can use your PIN to log in to this device the next time you’re at the login screen. However, this PIN should only apply to the device you set it up on, not any other devices.
