Managing A Data Centre Remains Stupidly Hard

Here’s the evidence you need when your boss asks you how hard it is to run a data centre: only 5 per cent of them have a proper data centre infrastructure management (DCIM) solution and more than half of them want to change whatever half-baked system they do have in place.

Speaking at a panel session at Data Centre World 2014 in Las Vegas, IDC analyst Jennifer Koppy cited those figures, then noted that DCIM adoption and DCIM satisfaction sat at opposite ends of the abacus.

“In the latest survey we did, 80 per cent had some kind of DCIM solution,” she said. “However, only 5 per cent have a full suite.” Everyone else, it seems, depends on Excel spreadsheets and dumb luck.

“There’s a gap that exists between what we want to have happen and what happens. 53 per cent typically want to switch.”
