America News Now spoke to dermatologist Gary Slaughter, who noted that camphor, phenol and menthol were common ingredients in "bad lip balm". When you spread it on it seems to soothe at first, but quickly dries up and requires reapplication. Alcohol and salicylic acid are two more ingredients that may cause some people irritation. Look for these ingredients before buying. That said, the most effective alternative is also the simplest: use Vaseline rather than a specific balm.

Does lip balm dry out your lips? [America Now News]

I used to use Chapstick and then Carmex flat out, and if I ever went more than two hours without them my lips were dry as hell, I'd also often wake up with cracked lips. Since stopping with them completely I'm fine.

Petroleum jelly FTW. Cheap, lasts forever, doesn't dry out, neutral. Used as a base ingredient for most dermatological ointments.
