Yesterday, the Government announced that millions of Australians will need to replace defective airbags in their vehicles following a fatality in NSW. The compulsory recall, which affects approximately 1.3 million vehicles in Australia, has a deadline of 2020. To make life slightly easier, the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) has compiled a list of every vehicles currently under recall, including the make, model and year range. Here’s the complete list.
Takata Airbags are used by a large range of car and bike manufacturers, including Ford, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Mazda, BMW, Jeep and Toyota. A degradation issue can cause the airbags to explode when they deploy, resulting in severe injuries and even death for the travellers they are attempting to protect.
Following a voluntarily recall drive in 2009, the Australian Government is now forcing motorists to return their vehicles for airbag replacements. There is a second subset of defective airbag that motorists need to be especially aware of: dubbed ‘Alpha’ airbags, these models are highly susceptible to dangerous explosions and should be replaced immediately.
“Drivers are strongly urged to check whether their motor vehicle has been recalled to replace faulty Takata airbags. These recalls affect a large number of car makes and models and a small number of motorcycles,” the ACCC explains.
