Video: Winter is the ideal time to plan your garden. If you’re planting outdoors, it’s also a good time to clear out weeds to keep them from seeding in your soil when the weather turns warm. It’s also a great time to sow next year’s seedlings.
Cold weather might not seem like the best condition to start your seedlings, but as Garden Fundamentals explains in the video above, exposing seedlings to this harsher weather makes them hardier and means they’re ready to go as soon as you can start planting. Winter sowing works especially well with most annuals and common perennials, most temperate trees and shrubs, and cool growing vegetables. Once your seeds are set in their containers, you can put them outside and wait for them to grow. Towards the end of the video, you can see they have had success even in snowy conditions.
The video above has a step-by-step walkthrough of how to properly prepare seedling containers, but essentially you take an old plastic container, poke holes in the bottom for drainage, add soil and seeds, and leave a hole in the top so gases can escape. You can use an old takeaway container or juice bottle, just make sure your seedlings have enough room to grow up.
