Predicting the future is near impossible -- but that doesn‘t stop us all from having a red hot go. Human beings have been predicting the future since the beginning of history and the results range from the hilarious to the downright uncanny.

One thing all future predictions have in common: they‘re rooted in our current understanding of how the world works. It‘s difficult to escape that mindset. We have no idea how technology will evolve, so our ideas are connected to the technology of today.

Just out of the Gmail Labs is a Google Maps preview function, which appends a miniature map — with full scaling, zoom and other Maps features — to the bottom of any message containing a Maps link.

Gmail's latest Labs offering is a tiny little thing, but perhaps a great one, especially on larger screens. Enable "Move Icon Column", and your attachment, calendar and other message icons move to the left of your subjects from the right.

Google added two new features to Gmail Labs today: The often-requested Nested Labels - for those of you who like folder-style label nesting - and "Message Sneak Peek", which provides a quick look at an email when you right-click the message in your inbox.

Gmail's Labs section graduates another feature into the mainstream today, pulling offline mail into the general settings pane. It's good news for Google Apps users without much Labs access, and it makes offline settings easier to access in Gmail.

If you wanted to change the font, size, or colour of your messages in Gmail, you normally have to do so on a mail-by-mail basis. Not so anymore, if you enable a new default text styling option from the Labs.
