We all have sex questions we’re too embarrassed to ask, and if you don’t have Dan Savage on speed dial, listening to podcasts is quite possibly your next best bet for getting guidance in the bedroom.
The questions these 11 sex podcasts seek to answer are both extremely specific and universal, and are probably the ones you’re secretly googling. These shows are a) helpful, b) entertaining, c) non-shaming and sex-positive, and d) totally hot. You might not make it through the list without pouncing on your partner or taking some time for yourself. When you’ve, er, finished, download a few of these babies to turn up the heat even more.
Sex Talk With My Mum
When KarenLee Poter started online dating (after her husband was tragically murdered! though don’t let that distract you) her son Cam was surprised and a bit disturbed to see her profile pop up on his dating apps. This was the launching point for Sex Talk With My Mum, in which KarenLee and Cam share absolutely everything about their dating journeys, getting much more explicit than you might personally want to with your own mum (or kid). Cam’s a comedian and KarenLee is a sexually-liberated, self-identified cougar; on Mondays they respond to listener comments and questions, and on Thursdays they feature guests, ranging from comedians, to porn stars, to their previous sexual partners. Absolutely nothing is off the table.
KarenLee and Cam live in L.A., but they’re originally from the midwest, so while they might not have the typical mother/son relationship, there is something adorable about their close bond, which seems as wholesome as apple pie (which, thanks to the film American Pie, is now an extremely sexual dessert). Strap on …your headphones to hear KarenLee talking about thigh-fucking and dick pics, and Cam’s possible Syphilis diagnosis. You’ll laugh and cringe and wonder how far these two will go.
Girls on Porn
The words people plug into porn sites reveal a lot about our most secretive desires, and each week on Girls on Porn, Laura and Rachel are digging into those search terms to finding and reviewing porn based on them. (Think: bondage, nerd, cosplay, spit play, Italian.) Their conversations shift the porn narrative by bringing us stuff that’s ethically made and hot as hell. (Plus they talk about why they think it’s hot or not.) They’re funny, smart, open-minded, and sex positive, and they’ll allow you to feel totally free while diving into your own next porn search. Start by scrolling through the archive to find a word you’ve searched for (we all have one) and let Laura and Rachel give you the thoughtful context about what you’re watching, or what you could be.
Private Parts Unknown
On Private Parts Unknown, comedians and best friends Courtney Kocak and Sophya Alexandra take their sex talk global, covering differing feelings around sex, relationships, and dating from country to country. From polyamory couples in Nova Scotia, to trans women in Africa, you’ll get a new perspective on sex education and open your mind to the ways people are doing it all over the world. When they’re not travelling, they focus on their L.A. stomping grounds (covering the abortion debate in southern California) and interview experts about why we cheat, body paint art, dick riding 101, a newly-founded strippers’ union, and more.
Turn Me On
On Turn Me On, married couple Jeremie and Bryde have open conversations about sex, love, and their polyamorous lives. By talking with sex workers, tantric healers, and others practicing polyamory and open relationships, they’ll deepen your thinking about what pleasure and relationships can look like and help you unlearn the passé beliefs about sex that have probably been burned in your brain since you turned 14. They sprinkle in tips and personal anecdotes you can take home with you, offering up food for thought about topics you might be unschooled in (sex and disability, the gender binary) or just feel uncomfortable about. Listening to them talk about their sex lives might inspire you to change yours — to be more adventurous, to be less judgmental, to be someone who knows what they want and how to get it.
Pop-culture fans, get ready to be turned on. Fangasm started as a Harry Potter erotic fan fiction podcast but has grown to encompass other worlds, from Game of Thrones, to Spider-Man, to The Office. They pull from popular TV and film to find discussion topics, and read fan fiction so explicit it would make George R.R. Martin blush. It’s a comedy show, so sometimes the more ridiculous the coupling, the better. It’s funny, it’s hot, and it might inspire you to get more creative in bed, or in your own writing.
Doing It! With Hannah Witton
YouTuber Hannah Witton gets frank about absolutely everything sex related in Doing It! Whether she’s sharing her own story of having sex with a stoma (an opening in the abdomen that diverts waste outside the body; very Cronenberg of her) or exploring frontiers of disability in sex work, being autistic in the kink scene, or trans health care and menstruation, she’s helping everyone to both feel less alone in their conceptions of sex and learn about things they never knew they never knew. It’s the forward-thinking sex ed we never got in school.
Ready for a quickie? In about ten minutes, Good Sex hands the mic to sex experts and enthusiasts who, through first-person dialogue, share their conversations and inner monologues about all sorts of sex: fat sex, booty calls, unusual kinks, and swinging. It’s the sex conversations we all should be having but might be a little too embarrassed to get into — but the voices of Good Sex are decidedly not. By listening to their turn-ons and the ways they pleasure themselves and others, you’ll open your mind to the kind of sex you haven’t even fantasized about yet, get a new perspective on doing it, learn something about yourself, and get better about asking for what you like. No filter, no shame.
At age 27, comedian Remy Kassimir had never had an orgasm (alone or partnered). She started How Cum? to learn how to do it. The early episodes are like taking Orgasms 101, as Remy explores the hows and whys of our bodies’ pleasure centres. Remy eventually came, and the episodes that follow cover how to make your orgasms even better, plus so much more. These days, Remy gives sex toy and TV/movie recommendations and offers assignments that will make you better and more confident in bed. Notable guests, from Margaret Cho to Jessamyn Stanley, are the popped cherry on top.
Sex With Emily
Is there a doctor in the sex podcast house? Sex With Emily is the place to get expert takes on doing the dirty deed with Dr. Emily Morse. This is a show for people who are ready to get serious and take their sex lives into their own hands. Emily offers approachable advice on things you’ve been wondering — — how to prepare for anal, what your kinks say about you, and how to orgasm better — and shares ideas you’ve never dreamed of, like how to build a sex room or kegels for men. Interesting experts join her to discuss fun and fascinating topics like lube, squirting, edging, and how to figure out if you’re bi. She touches upon relationship and communication advice too, and will help you see how it’s all connected.
WHOREible Decisions makes the rest of the podcasts on this list sound like Mister Rogers’ Neighbourhood. Hosts Mandii B & WeezyWTF aren’t afraid to talk about the raciest, rawist, and most explicit bedroom topics. (To start naming them here would require too many asterisks for a family website.) The reason this raunchy show is really soars, though, is the fearless self-confidence Mandii and Weezy bring to their discussions of taboo topics, which will hopefully rub off on you a bit (not like that) as they interview a mix of couples, pornstars, activists, celebs, and doctors to give you a completely unfiltered look at what we’re doing together. Listening to this show might not make you the nastiest bitch on the block, but it will get you more excited about sex, and remind you to have fun doing whatever it is you like and do.
