What’s New on HBO Max in September 2021

This month, HBO Max announced plans to overhaul its utterly terrible app experience, which is good not only because you’ll be able to load your watchlist or fast-forward 10 seconds without your streaming device overheating, but also because there’s no reason the most consistently interesting, most-bang-for-your-buck streaming service should be primarily known for its shitty UX.

I mean, just look at the bounty coming to the service in September. There’s another simultaneous theatrical/streaming premiere in Malignant (Sept. 10), a new horror flick from James Wan (The Conjuring, et al.) about a woman who starts experiencing nightmares filled with blood and murder that turn out to be much more than dreams.

Even at 92, Clint Eastwood is still chugging along, making the kind of movies your dad grandpa loves; on Sept. 17, HBO Max will drop Cry Macho, a new film about Mexican immigration based on 1975 novel. The film has reportedly been in the works for more than 30 years, a fact the trailer makes astoundingly clear.

Editor’s Note: To access this content in Australia, you’ll need the use of a VPN.

A handful of other recent theatrical releases — Mortal Kombat (Sept. 9), Those Who Wish Me Dead (Sept. 30) — are also returning following their limited-engagement premieres. We’re also finally far enough out from the wasteland that was the 2020 film release calendar that some genuinely great movies from last year are dropping into the rotation too, including Oscar nominees News of the World (Sept. 4) and Promising Young Woman (Sept. 25).

Then there are the Max Originals — the streamer hasn’t gotten as much attention for its TV offerings, but it has some good stuff coming up, including a limited series remake of a classic Igmar Bergman film in Scenes From a Marriage (Sept. 12), which charts the dissolution of the union of a couple played by Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain (and if those two gorgeous specimens of human can’t make it, what hope is there for the rest of us?). There’s also another Adventure Time movie (Sept. 2) and the launch of the third season of Doom Patrol (Sept. 23), the best superhero show anywhere on TV.

Oh, for some reason there’s also this kids’ animated series about the early years of Ellen Degeneres, Little Ellen (Sept. 13), which I can only assume entered production way before May 2021.

Here’s the list of everything coming to (and leaving) HBO Max in September 2021. Titles with (HBO) next to them are available on HBO and HBO Max; everything else is exclusive to HBO Max.
