July 14 means it’s National Mac and Cheese day – yes there’s a day for that too. So what does one do to celebrate this special day? Eat mac and cheese of course.
In Australia, it’s winter, which means it’s also the perfect time to be digging into a warm bowl of cheesy carb goodness. Sure you could go ahead and make a traditional mac and cheese recipe, or you could use everyone’s new favourite appliance – the air fryer.

How to make mac and cheese bread bowls
To start with, you’re going to need to pre-make your own mac and cheese for this to work. If you need some ideas, here’s a recipe for buffalo mac and cheese.
You’ll also need a loaf of bread that hasn’t been pre-sliced. Then follow these directions:
- Thickly slice your bread and hollow out the middle so you have a bowl.
- Butter the insides of the bowl edges and toast them in the air fryer
- Spoon your mac and cheese mixture into your bread bowls.
- Add some extra grated cheese on top
- Cook those bad boys in the air fryer for a bit longer and you’ll have a crispy toasted bread bowl of mac and cheese.

And if this recipe isn’t your jam, there’s always mac and cheese ice cream.
