During the more isolated periods of the last year or so of the pandemic, more and more people were turning to digital methods of sexual pleasure in lieu of physical contact.

This social-distancing from our fellow human beings saw a boom in sex toysparticularly teledildonics, which are high-tech smart toys that can be accessed and controlled remotely by using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections.

One specific section of the adult entertainment industry that saw a particular boom was the interactive intimacy of virtual reality porn. So what exactly is VR porn and how can you try it out?

VR porn, coming at you from every direction

Virtual reality porn is exactly what it sounds like. Like a normal VR experience, you strap on a headset and then choose a movie to become immersed in. The difference here being that these VR scenarios are designed for sexual stimulation. It’s less Ready Player One, more “Ready Player Cum”.

While traditional porn can be immersive, there’s still a degree of separation between yourself and the screen or page. With VR porn it becomes a three-dimensional experience. Instead of being locked into a single, static camera angle, you’re given a 180-degree or 360-degree view of a scene.

A good VR experience will trick your brain into thinking that you’re in the room where it’s happening, and that you’re actually experiencing what you’re seeing. You’re no longer just watching but participating in it.

While you can find a subsection of VR videos on sites like PornHub, there are websites dedicated specifically to the genre, like VRPorn, VR Bangers and FeelMe.

There’s also a range of VR porn games available, which allow for a greater range of mobility and interactivity.

What VR headset should you use?

The Oculus Quest 2 is probably your best option, in terms of both practical use and affordability.

There have been smartphone-powered VR headsets, like the Samsung Gear or Google Cardboard – but these have since been discontinued. In terms of higher-end VR headsets, Oculus’ main competition is the HTC Vive, although this headset has an absurdly high price tag.

There is also the previous model of the Oculus Quest, along with the Oculus Rift S, but your best sticking with the newest tech if you want a higher-quality experience.

The Oculus Quest 2 was released in October 2020 and comes in two storage sizes, 64GB for $479, and 256GB for $639. It uses a LCD display with a 1832 x 1920 per eye resolution, with a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

The only caveat for the Quest 2 is that you’ll need an active Facebook account to use the VR headset – unless you want to shill out the big bucks for a business model.

Obviously, dropping a couple hundred dollars on a VR headset just so you can watch porn might not be the easiest thing to validate. Thankfully, there’s still plenty of things you can do with an Oculus Quest that don’t involve masturbating.

Is there anything else you can add into the mix?

If you’re looking for a comfier set-up, there are some Oculus Quest accessories, like the Elite strap or alternate facial interfaces, that will let the headset sit a bit better on your head.

If you want to throw a sex toy or whatever you regularly use in your masturbation routine into the mix while using your Oculus, that’s also an option. Just make sure you have enough free hands to do everything.

There’s also a range of sex toys that are designed for VR experiences, like the Fleshlight Launch or the Kiiroo KEON, which can be synced to the rhythms of whatever you’re watching. These toys can help to add a physical element that combines with the VR movie to help further immerse you into whatever you’re watching.

It’ll make you think and feel like you’re actually there, without actually being there.
