How to Get a Refund for IKEA’s Recalled Dinnerware

Between its reasonable prices and streamlined Scandinavian design (and sure, those meatballs), IKEA is a perennially popular spot to pick up stylish furniture, quirky decor items, and other home essentials. Even if the store’s pop culture reputation as the site of many a breakup is well-deserved, the ability to pick up a matching set of dinnerware on a tight budget makes a visit worth the risk.

That said, you shouldn’t leave IKEA expecting your purchases to last forever. While affordable, that $US5 ($6) four-pack of wine glasses isn’t likely to become a family heirloom. But you should be able to trust the brand’s products are safe. That’s why, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, IKEA recently announced a voluntary recall of some of their bowls, plates, and mugs. Here’s how to find out if yours are affected, and if they are, how to get a refund.

What’s included in the IKEA dinnerware recall

IKEA’s voluntary recall includes bowls, plates, and mugs from both the HEROISK and TALRIKA product lines that are made from PLA (polylactic acid or polylactide) material. The reason for the recall is that these items can become brittle and break. Here’s a look at some of the products included in the recall:

While annoying regardless of the temperature, if the food or beverage you’re placing in or on the dish is hot, it can potentially leak out and cause a burn. So far, there has only been one reported incident of this occurring in the U.S., though the person involved wasn’t injured.

The items included in the recall were sold in U.S. stores and online between Aug. 2019 and May 2021, and cost from $US3.99 ($5)–$US11.99 ($15). These are the products included in the recall in Australia:

How to get a refund on recalled IKEA products

If you own any of the recalled products, you can return them to any IKEA store for a full refund. Neither a receipt nor any other proof of purchase is required. At this point, IKEA hasn’t provided customers — including ones who may not live near a store — with an alternative method of getting a refund. If you fall into this category, or have any other questions about the recall, contact IKEA.
