Check Out This Free Music and Podcast Production Camp for Your Teenager

If your teenager has ever wanted to compose their own music or produce their own podcast, they’ve got a chance to learn some basics these holidays in their own homes, at their own pace, for free.

Non-profit organisation Department of Sound has created a virtual camp called “Summer of Sound” to teach teenagers the fundamentals of beat making, song structure and composition, audio recording, instrumentation and arrangement, and podcast production.

The course will be broken up into seven lessons that will focus on:

  • The basic functions and tools of Soundtrap, the web-based production software they’ll be using throughout the course
  • How to create tracks using keyboard, patterns and instrument tabs
  • Composition basics and live recording functions
  • The piano function, the keyboard and how to create original music
  • Podcast functions and the basics of recording a self-interview
  • Insight into the music industry, career paths, marketing and distribution
  • Final projects

The virtual camp will consist of step-by-step, pre-recorded videos and written lessons. For the final projects, students will be challenged to publish a two-minute music production (either a beat or a full song) or a two-minute podcast.

Participants must be at least 13 years old and they’ll need access to a laptop or desktop computer, a tablet or a smart phone, plus access to Wi-Fi. You can register for Summer of Sound now; lessons will be available starting on June 22, and students can work at their own pace through September 22.
