How To Work Out When You Can’t Go To The Gym

Whether you’re self-quarantining, your gym has cancelled events as a social distancing measure, or you just want to be cautious, it’s nice to have options for working out besides going to your usual gym or fitness class. Here are a few ways to stay active on your own.

Get outdoors

The idea of social distancing, in a nutshell, is to stay six feet away from other people and not touch things that other people touch. While that’s often summarised as “stay home,” it’s actually fine to leave your house as long as you can follow those rules.

That means you can still go for a run or a bike ride on your own, or step out into nature for a hike or other outdoorsy activities. (If you’re bringing a partner for safety reasons, just be aware that the two of you might share germs. That said, if you’re both feeling well or if you already live together, there’s not much risk to any one particular outing.)

Replace group classes with apps or videos

Miss that group fitness vibe? Fortunately you can still get it without the actual group. We tested several apps that put an instructor in your ear or on your phone or tablet screen. Try one on an exercise bike at the gym (that you wipe down thoroughly before and after) or go for a run outside.

You can also find workouts online. Here are some of the best videos to follow along with if you’re on your own. When you’ve worked through those, don’t forget our classic guide to the best YouTube workout channels.

Strength train with minimal equipment

All those weights at the gym are really handy, but they’re not the only way to train your muscles. Remember that your at-home options include:

All of these are great as stopgaps until you get back to your usual routine. That said, if you have some space in a basement or spare room, this might be an ideal time to start putting together your dream home gym.
