Mute All Your Friends Who Have Annoying Resolutions

We’re not even a full week into January, but chances are there’s somebody on your timeline with a new year’s resolution they just won’t shut up about. Don’t unfriend them—they’ll be back to normal in a month or so. The 30-day mute was made for this.

Muting is different than blocking. When you mute someone, you’re still connected (as friends or followers), so you can still DM each other and so on. Nothing really changes—except that their posts just happen to be missing from your timeline. They won’t even know you muted them. The controls for this are pretty easy to find. For example:

  • On Facebook, click the arrow at the top of the person’s post, and choose “Snooze [friend] for 30 days.”

  • On Instagram, tap the three dots at the top of the post and choose Mute. You’ll have the choice to mute the person’s posts, or their posts and their stories.

  • On Twitter, use the arrow at the top of the post to mute the person. (Muting the “conversation” only silences notifications you’re tagged in, so sadly this won’t make individual threads go away.)

  • Mute entire categories of resolutions on Twitter by muting a keyword (say, #Whole30) for 30 days. Or 7 days, if you expect it will fizzle out fast.

Some platforms let you mute a person or keyword for a time period, like 30 days; for others, you’ll have to unmute manually. So while you’re cleaning up your feed, set a calendar reminder to go back and unmute everybody on February 1.
