Turn Your iPhone Into An iPod With Rewound

iOS: Here’s a silly thing to do on a Friday. Download Rewound, and listen to your Apple Music library (streaming or owned) through an old click-wheel iPod interface.

A limited version is available for free, but $3 unlocks the full app, and if you enjoy the app after a test run, you might as well pay up.

Rewound is an unofficial app. In order to get accepted into the App Store (unlike other retro iPod apps that haven’t been approved), the app couldn’t include any Apple branding or trade dress—it couldn’t emulate an iPod out of the box. You have to download a picture of the iPod wheel yourself. Here’s how.

  1. With the default buttons, navigate to Settings. Toggle on Winding Navigation.

  2. Then select Skin, and Download Skins.

  3. A GIF will demonstrate how to save a photo to your library. Choose Twitter or Weibo, you don’t need to have an account on either.

  4. On either one, you’ll see a few iPod scroll wheels. Pick one you like and tap it.

  5. On Weibo, tap and hold the download button in the top right, then select Add to Photos.

  6. On Twitter, tap and hold on the image, and select Add to Photos. Tap Done in the top left.

  7. Select Add skin from Photos.

The app should tell you that it’s switching to “Layout 3”—moving the buttons around behind the skin you’ve downloaded, so that you can actually scroll with the scroll wheel.

You can download people’s cute custom scroll wheels, which will make the experience feel less like an iPod and more like customising Winamp. By the way, Winamp is back too—but only on Windows.
