As many World of Hyatt members already know, any accumulated Hyatt points will expire after 24 months of inactivity. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to book yourself a Hyatt stay every two years to avoid losing your points. There are a number of ways to maintain your World of Hyatt rewards past the 24-month mark, including redeeming your points, purchasing new points, and giving your points to another World of Hyatt member.
You can also stop by a Hyatt property and make a small purchase. Like, a cup of coffee.
The Points Guy recently shared a story from a reader who learned that a single coffee was all he needed to keep his World of Hyatt rewards active:
I called World of Hyatt and the customer service agent gave me a great tip. She suggested that I go to any Hyatt hotel, buy a cup of coffee and present my World of Hyatt membership number. I went one morning recently, and for a couple of dollars I got a decent cup of coffee and a two-year reprieve. My points were in my account before I managed to finish my coffee.
The official World of Hyatt FAQ notes that you can keep your World of Hyatt account active by earning additional Hyatt points “on eligible stay/spend at a participating Hyatt or M life Rewards destination,” and many people might not realise that the “spend” part of “stay/spend” can include something as small as a cafe beverage.
The Points Guy notes that “you should confirm your purchase is eligible beforehand, since independent establishments might not offer rewards even if they’re on hotel property.” You could also just make the small purchase and see if you get new World of Hyatt points in your account, if you don’t want to go to the trouble of asking someone to confirm eligibility.
So, if your World of Hyatt rewards points are in danger of expiring, it’s time to treat yourself to a cup of coffee—and to ask yourself whether you really want to be a World of Hyatt member. (If you’ve neither used nor earned any Hyatt points in the past two years, what are you waiting for?)
Then, once your coffee is finished, see if there’s a way to start redeeming some of those accumulated rewards.
