What To Do If Your Wi-Fi Drivers Are Blocking Window 10 Updates

Microsoft is preventing certain PCs running older versions of AVG and Avast antivirus software and outdated Qualcomm Wi-Fi drivers from installing Windows 10 versions 1809, 1903, and 1909. Here’s why: Microsoft no longer allows Windows 10 to automatically update on any and all systems due to potential bugs and incompatibility issues.

These specific blocks go a step further and outright stop users with older versions of AVG and Avast antivirus products and certain Qualcomm Wi-Fi drivers from manually installing Windows 10 updates altogether. But that’s not a bad thing, since it’s better to not have a slightly improved version of Windows 10 than one that doesn’t work at all, right?

Unfortunately, ZDNet reports that many users have been unable to upgrade to the newest versions of Windows 10 for months. If you’ve run into this issue, then it’s possible your antivirus apps or network adaptor drivers are outdated and need to be upgraded before you can install the new versions of Windows 10.

How to update AVG and Avast Antivirus software

The Windows 10 update block affects AVG and Avast users running version 19.5 or earlier of the following apps:

  • Avast Premium Security

  • Avast Premier

  • Avast Internet Security

  • Avast Free Antivirus

  • AVG Ultimate

  • AVG Internet Security

  • AVG Antivirus Free

Avast and AVG have support pages that include links to the appropriate software updates and installation guides that should get your software up to date and resolve the Window 10 update issues.

Update Qualcomm Wi-Fi drivers to fix Windows 10 update issues

If your AVG or Avast antivirus apps are up to date (or you don’t use their software in the first place), then your Wi-Fi drivers may be holding back your Windows 10 update installation. You can fix this by checking for driver updates. Here’s how:

  1. In the Windows taskbar search box, search for “Device Manager” and open it.

  2. Scroll down to “Network Adapters” then click the arrow icon to show all the installed components.

  3. Find your Qualcomm device from the list, then Right-Click its name and select “Update Driver.”

  4. Click “Search automatically for updated drivers.”

  5. Let the process run. If a new driver was installed, you should now be up to date and able to successfully install the new Windows 10 update. If not, then you will need to manually download and install the necessary driver(s) for your network adaptor. You can find instructions for doing so on Microsoft’s support page.
