In case you’ve missed it, it’s Evil Week at Lifehacker—a week dedicated to doing morally questionable things the right way. Yesterday, we shared strategies on how to get out of virtually anything just by using your kids as an excuse. On the phone with someone who won’t shut up? Tell them there’s an emergency involving your kids and you must hang up!
But what should you do if, say, you don’t have kids? If you’ve ever wanted to end a call—without being rude—here’s an especially evil (but absolutely useful) hack from Reddit that might solve your problem. “Start every phone call by saying ‘my [battery’s] almost dead,’ so you can hang up when you’re bored,” u/chicagodogmom606 writes.
Simple, effortless, and so smart—by prefacing any call with this simple warning, your caller might expect an abrupt end to your conversation without even questioning it. But if you really want to pull off the act, you’ll have to remember to turn off your phone, or at least, silence it as soon as it rings if they decide to try you once more.
But as u/maldio points out, just remember to use this tip sparingly; after the third or fourth time, your friend or parent might catch on, so it’s best reserved for those times when you’re desperate for a quick escape.
