Launch Web Apps And Services With These “.new” Sites

Google recently announced that it’s letting loose a brand-new domain name—.new—which comes with one clever hitch. Those purchasing one have to use it to create a shortcut to an activity, action, or app. Or, to put it in Google terms, “All .new domain names must be used for action generation or online creation flows.”

As a Lifehacker editor, I love the concept of these .new domains, because they make it super-simple to perform annoying activities like loading up a new document in Google Drive. What was previously a multi-step process has now been reduced to a URL: docs.new. Click that link, or enter that into your address bar at hit Enter, and you’ll be staring at a blank Google Doc. I think that’s even faster than launching Microsoft Word on your desktop.

While the limited registration period for .new domain names doesn’t kick off until December 2, there are already a few helpful selections floating around. Here are the most interesting ones we’ve dug up so far and the services they’re associated with—let us know in the comments if you’ve found any more!
