Automatically Organise Your Downloads With This Chrome Extension

Chrome: I download a lot of things. We all do. In my case, my Windows Downloads folder is basically my catch-all for everything I’m working on, as well as the primary archive for files and folders I need to save somewhere else (but haven’t yet). This means said Downloads folder can get unruly, and I have found a new Chrome extension to fix that.

You can probably guess what the extension does just by its title: Organise Downloads by Date. It doesn’t have any reviews as of when I wrote this article, which would normally make me hesitant to recommend it, but its full source code is viewable on GitHub—so there’s that.

Install this extension, which I first heard about over at Ghacks, and it will automatically sort everything you download into new folders (within your default download folder) based on the date at which you downloaded that item. In other words, you’ll start to see parent folders of years—2019, and soon 2020—with folders for each month you downloaded an item.

Programmer Lucas Bustamante’s extension is simple, but that’s all you need. If you want help finding which folder contains whatever it is you downloaded, just run a search in File Explorer or Finder. This extension is great for keeping organised precisely because you don’t have to do anything to get it to work. These folders are all created for you; you just have to worry about downloading the files, which shouldn’t be too taxing.

And, yes, you could just right-click within your downloads folder in Windows, for example, and opt to group all your files by the date they were created. That’s only a visual fix, though. Your downloads folder will still be a mess, whereas the Organise Downloads by Date extension solves that core issue without fuss.
