Pocket Casts, Our New Favourite Podcast App, Is Now Free

Pocket Casts was already a great podcast app, and now it’s even better — mainly because it’s free.

The app previously cost about $6 on both the App Store and Google Play, or $13 for the desktop client, but it’s now entirely free to download because Pocket Casts has switched over to a freemium model. In other words, you get all of the regular Pocket Casts features for nothing now, if you download the smartphone app, and you can pay a monthly subscription fee to add even more features (if you’re so inclined).

Here’s a quick list of what’s included in the free Pocket Casts app:

  • Sleep timer

  • Cross-platform content syncing

  • Dark theme setting

  • Volume booster

  • Silence trim

  • Adjustable playback speed

  • Customisable gesture controls

  • OPML/XML import and export

  • Content sorting, filters, and playlists

  • Third-party media file support

As mentioned, subscribing to Pocket Casts Plus ($1.50 per month or $15 annually) will nab you a few other perks over the free version. These include 10GB of cloud storage, which you can use to play your other content on any device with the Pocket Casts app, as well as a smattering of custom app themes. The Plus subscription also unlocks access to the Windows and Mac desktop apps, as well as the web-based Pocket Casts player. (Those who previously purchased the desktop client will receive three years of Plus for free.)

You can download Pocket Casts for free (or update to the new version) via the app’s Google Play and App Store pages, and those interested can sign up for a Plus subscription here.
