Install Spotify’s New Android Beta To Resurrect Its Almighty Widget

Who would have thought that one little widget — rather, the deletion of it — would piss off so many Android Spotify fans? That’s exactly what happened following the company’s recent decision to kill its Android widget, and here’s the good news: It’s back, and you can download a version of Spotify with that restored widget right now.

The catch? You’ll need to grab a Spotify beta, which means you’ll have to sign up for the beta and deal with potentially buggy software. That’s the price you pay if you want early access to the widget, which will eventually return for all Spotify Android users (thank God).

If the widget isn’t enough to get you to try out Spotify’s beta — and it should be — there’s one more feature that’s worth exploring if you’re currently running Android 10.

As Android Police reports, the beta version of Spotify’s app also allows you to move forward and back in songs you’re listening to via a progress bar in Android’s notification bar.

To get started with the Spotify beta, which unlocks both features early:

  1. Click this link to join the Google Group for the Spotify Beta.

  2. Click this link once you’re a member of the Google Group.

  3. Click on the big, blue “Become a Tester” box

Finally, make sure you’ve updated your app to the latest version in Google Play. You should then have the version that grants you access to the widget, as well as the updated progress bar.
