The 2019 Australian Federal Election is set to take place in a couple of weeks. If you’re planning to take a punt on the outcome, conventional wisdom is to place your bet now, before the race tightens. But which major party should you back?
First, a caveat – gambling is a mug’s game that few people should partake in. If you’ve got disposable income to burn, donate it to charity or buy yourself a bargain. (And if you don’t have disposable income to burn, for shit’s sake – don’t gamble!)
But if you’re determined to place a bet on the Federal Election, our advice is to ignore the odds entirely. Instead, back the major party you hope is going to lose.
Think of it as a psychological salve – if the party you hate romps home at the election, your winnings will take the sting out of your disappointment. And if they fail to form a majority, you’ll actually be happy about losing the bet. It’s a win-win situation!
If you hate the Liberals, you’ll currently take home four times what you put down in the event of a Coalition victory. If you’d love to see Labor stumble at the final hurdle you’ll make a 20% profit in the likely event that your hopes are dashed.
In short, gambling on Federal elections is stupid. But if you’re going to do it, this is the best way to go about it.
