Keep Your Financial Information Private By Opting Out Of These Google Pay Settings

Google Pay is a convenient way to consolidate your various payment methods under one account, and makes online shopping that much more streamlined. However, there are a few default Google Pay options you may want to consider opting out of if you’re concerned about how much of your personal data and credit information Google has the ability to share with others.

Here are the three settings in question:

Of these settings, the first two are the most worth your consideration. These both allow Google to share your credit rating and personal information, respectively, with businesses Google owns. Disabling these will stop Google from sharing this information, but won’t affect your ability to use Google Pay as a checkout method.

The third option is more benign; it allows Google to automatically inform businesses and online merchants if you have a Google Pay account, which will make Google Pay a possible checkout option on some websites. Disabling this setting can remove Google Pay as a possible checkout option, but opting out may be worth it if you’re not into the idea of Google sharing such information (and if that’s the case, it may also be smart to just leave Google Pay altogether).

All three options are on by default and must be manually opted out of, but they aren’t always easily accessible and are deep within the Google Pay webpage settings. You can normally find them in the following ways:

  1. Use this link to open the Google Pay settings webpage. The link should work in any browser, provided you can sign in with your Google account.

  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the page; uncheck the settings you want to opt out of.

  3. Tap/click “Save” to apply the changes.

Alternatively, you can navigate to them in Chrome by doing the following:

  1. Tap/Click the three stacked dots icon, then go to Settings>Payment methods.

  2. Tap/Click the “add or manage Google Pay payment methods, visit your Google Account” link.

  3. This will load a new page. In the left corner of the new page, tap/click the three stacked lines icon, then tap Settings to open the Google Pay settings page.

  4. Scroll down until you see the three settings listed above, and uncheck the ones you don’t want active.

  5. Tap/click “Save” for the changes to take effect.
