Spike Your Cola With Woodsy Cynar

Spike Your Cola With Woodsy Cynar

“Something and Coke” barely qualify as cocktails. But you can’t deny that they are delicious, particularly when you pair cola with a complex, herbaceous liqueur such as my good friend Cynar.

Cynar — which you may remember from this or this or this — is an artichoke liqueur that doesn’t taste very much like artichokes. There is a slightly vegetal quality, but all of those herbs and other botanicals means it reads more like a lush forest than a green garden.

When paired with Coca-Cola you get a sweet and bitter, slightly refined drink perfect for pairing with pizza, takeaway or whatever else you wish to shove in your face on Saturday night. Add bitters for a bit more complexity, and experiment with flavours to shift the profile in one direction or the other (both lime and chocolate bitters are good here).

To make this drink, you will need:

  • 45ml Cynar
  • About 120ml Coca-Cola
  • 3 dashes of your favourite bitters, either original or flavoured

Add Cynar and cola to a lowball filled with ice and gently stir to just combine. Dash in the bitters, sip and repeat as needed.
