Keep Track Of Outgrown Clothing With Safety Pins

At least once or twice a month, I notice that one of my son’s T-shirts has gotten too small or the hemline of a pair of pants has crept up too far, and I think to myself, “It’s time to put that in the ‘Donate’ pile.” Each time, I’m sure I will remember which item is ready to head out the door.

Then I wash all of his clothes and have absolutely no idea whether it was the orange shirt or the green shirt, the dark jeans or the light pair. So back into the closet they go, until the next time he wears it and I say, “Oh, it’s definitely time to put that in the ‘Donate’ pile.”

Thankfully, one of the members of our Offspring Parent Facebook Group has a hack for that. Over the weekend, Melissanichole Hoaglund posted this message:

We have a jar of safety pins on the washer. When the boy outgrows something, we put a pin on the top right before we put it in the hamper. That way it is labelled for the resale box and it doesn’t go into the dresser by mistake.

When you pull the clothing out fresh and clean from the dryer, there will be no mistaking which items must go and which may stay for another week.
