How To Switch To Twitter’s New IOS ‘Dark Mode’

Twitter announced today that its iOS app has a few expanded options for Dark Mode, if you’d prefer to not go blind by staring at the app’s regular white background all day long. You now have two options to pick from — “Dim” mode, which combines black and darker grays, and “Lights out” mode, which sets your background to black.

Additionally, you’ll now be able to use a new “Automatic dark mode” feature to switch your iPhone or iPad to dark mode automatically at night and back to “normal mode” during the day.

To get started with all of these features, first make sure your Twitter app is updated to its most recent version via the App Store. Then, just in case, I’d force-close the Twitter app if you have it open on your device.

Relaunch Twitter, tap on your profile icon in the upper-left corner, and tap on the little lightbulb in the lower-left corner to turn regular dark mode — the “Dim” version — on and off. You should now get a prompt about “Automatic dark mode,” which will look like this:

Visit your Twitter app settings—via that same sidebar—and tap on “Display and sound” to change between the two different dark modes (and turn “Automatic dark mode” on and off). Here’s a quick look at the differences between “Dim” and “Lights out” mode:

That’s it. While the service still has no way to edit tweets, at least you can pound out your 280-character frustrations to a lovely darker background. And, yes, the automated dark mode already exists on Android—expect “Lights out” to arrive at some future point.
