Excel For Android Just Got An Amazing New Feature

Microsoft keeps adding new features to its mobile and cloud apps at a rapid rate. Now, if you’re using Excel for Android, you’ll be able to take a photo of a table and Excel will perform its own OCR, or should I say AI, magic and make it into a live, editable spreadsheet!

The new feature, part of how Microsoft says they are bringing AI to Excel, lets you shoot a picture of some data, such as a table from a book, and then import it automatically as a spreadsheet.

If you jump to the 2:48 mark of this video, you can get a full rundown of the new feature.

The new feature isn’t available to iOS yet – that’s “coming soon” according to the announcement.

It’s a neat feature but I think tagging it as AI is a bit of marketing bullshit given the ability to do this has been called OCR (Optical Character Recognition) for the last 25 years or so. At least you don’t need to rekey the data you’ve borrowed from other sources any more.

On the image front, you can now also add files and photos to to-do items in Microsoft To-Do.

Microsoft has announced a number of other updates including some security enhancements and the ability for Microsoft Teams to work more efficiently in the healthcare vertical.
