It’s Official: Samsung’s Foldable Phone Launches Next Week

After months of relentless teasing, Samsung is finally set to unveil its folding smartphone for the first time. (The faux reveal at last year’s Samsung Developer Conference doesn’t count – you could barely see the thing.) Here’s everything you need to know, including how to watch the event live.

(And yes, it’s going to cost a goddamn motser.)”]

Samsung today confirmed that its folding smartphone will make an appearance at Samsung Unpacked on February 20, 2019. The above promo video makes this abundantly clear. If the bending Hangul script wasn’t enough of an indication, there’s also the slogan: “The Future Unfolds.” Not exactly subtle.

This essentially confirms that Samsung will be showcasing not one, but two flagship phones at the event: the Samsung Galaxy S10 and its unnamed folding sibling (tentatively dubbed the ‘Samsung Galaxy X’.) In other words, this isn’t an event that Samsung and Android fans will want to miss out on.

For those who somehow missed all the hoopla, foldable phones are an entirely new form factor that come with bendable displays. This allows you to ‘unfold’ the device like a flip phone; essentially giving you a smartphone and tablet in one.

The device was briefly shown off by Samsung during an SDC keynote in 2018. It folds inwards and boasts a third OLED on the outer side with full smartphone functionality. When unfolded, the screen measures 7.3 inches, making it the biggest smartphone on the market by a considerable margin.

The Unpacked event is scheduled to kick off at 11am in San Francisco on February 20. In Australia, this works out to Feb 21, 6am AEDT. So not too horribly early for a change. Hurrah!

The event will be live streamed on Samsung’s website. Brig yer popcorn!
