How To Pit A Peach

Peaches can be a bit clingy, especially when it comes to getting them off the pit, but there are a few things you can do to make this juicy task a little easier.

First, know that there are two different types of peaches: freestone and clingstone. As their names would suggest, the flesh of one clings to the pit, while the other separates freely.

Having a hard time finding freestone? Don’t worry, you can still separate fruit from pit.

To start, make sure your peach is as ripe as can be, as unripe fruit will be harder to remove. Then, slice the peach in half — vertically from stem to bottom — and twist the two halves until they separate. The pit will stick in one side, and you should be able to pull it out with your fingers.

If it’s still being a little stubborn, try gently prying it out with a paring knife, or cut it into slices, and pull the slices from the stone.

    I wonder if anyone else is experiencing un-eatable peaches purchased from Woolworths. They look really nice in the shop, just a little firm. I keep them in the fruit bowl waitng for them to become softer, & ripe. However, whilst the peach is still firm the skin wrinkles and begins to rot. I am then left with a peach which is soft on the skin but still very not ripe on the inside. Crunchy in fact.
