All Our Favourite Super Bowl Snacks

All Our Favourite Super Bowl Snacks

I’ve heard tell of a big sporting event this weekend in the U.S and, if you plan on gathering people to watch it at your home, you are going to need some snacks. Luckily, we have a lot of those around here.

If however, like most Aussies this weekend, you aren’t hosting a Super Bowl party then maybe consider these snack options for your next get together instead.

Wings

There are multiple ways to wing it. You can sous vide them in duck fat and then shallow fry, or you can steam and broil ‘em (either using the Instant Pot or a steam basket on the stove).

Both methods result in super juicy meat and crazy crispy skin, and both allow you to partially cook the wings a day ahead of time. For the sauce, it’s hard to go wrong with a stick of butter and cup of Frank’s, but perhaps consider availing yourself of a chicken Caesar wing, which works particularly well if you’re in the mood to grill.

Boards of food

You don’t have to go full snack stadium, but no one will be disappointed by a big board of finger-friendly bites.

You can build a perfect cheese board (round it out with a melted wheel of something soft) or focus on the more pickle-y side of life with a veggie-heavy vesper board (roast your pickled vegetables for even more flavour).

Beyond slices of fancy meats, you can flesh out your charcuterie board with a spicy nduja-like spread, homemade chicken liver mousse, or a rustic sous-vide terrine.

(If your masculinity is so fragile you can’t eat terrine while watching sports, I don’t know how to help you.)

Onion dip

There are a lot of good dips out there, but onion dip is a genre unto itself.

I like a caramelised onion dip and a green onion dip, which both rely heavily on sour cream, but this smoky, tahini-based wonder made with charred onions will shock and awe even the most picky onion dip connoisseur.

(You can make it with any charred vegetable, actually, but I’d start with onion, which is the best vegetable.)

Mine is usually more of a free-range fridge scrounge than an actual meal, and I always have a lot of questions: Are those leftovers too old to eat, or am I just a coward? Who ate all my cheese? Why didn’t I stuff my suitcase with fruit cake?”]

Cheese in all of its forms

Cheese balls are equal parts delicious and charming, and they’re extremely adaptable. Not only can you switch up the flavour profile as you desire, you can change the shape of a ball to match the one that’s being kicked, tossed, and chased after by men in very tight short pants.

If you want to be extra cute about it, you can make little mini balls and shove pretzel sticks into them. For a slightly fancier cheese spread, you can always make fromage fort, a blend of delicious cheeses, wine, garlic, and butter. Serve it cold with crudité, or smear it on toast points and broil.

If you’re looking for a saucy, queso-like bowl of hot cheese, we have four different routes you can take, including a vegan option and a way to turn any cheese—even the harder bois — into a melty bowl of liquid gold.

Other exciting options

The above should be enough to feed a hungry crowd but, should you need to supplement, let me recommend a nachos built on Doritos.

Also, it may be bit unorthodox, but a large casserole is actually a perfect way to feed a crowd. We have a Super Bowl casserole—which is sure to be a home run — but the cookout casserole and cheese plate casserole would also meet your needs.
