The holidays are coming up fast which means it’s time to start crafting that perfect Out of Office message. I used to try and be creative with these, but at some point reverted to the classic “I’m out until X. Email this guy if you need something.” It’s not exactly going to put a smile on anyone’s face, but it gets the job done.
For fun OOO messages, Kayak has created an Out of Office generator. Exactly what it sounds like, it auto-generates something a little less drab than my boilerplate OOO you can send to your contacts while you’re away.

I check all my new mail, and I put off the actual task I opened Gmail for. None of that new email was urgent, but I couldn’t ignore all those bold lines. So now I hide my inbox with Inbox When Ready.”]
To generate your automatic reply, you input which holiday you’re celebrating (or if you’re just out for an adventure), when you’re returning to work, your holiday cocktail of choice, your favourite holiday snack, your availability while away, your OOO contact and, most importantly, your out-of-office vibe from “keep it professional” to “six shots in at the office party.”
Here’s a professional one:
Thanks for checking in. But I’m away from my desk and won’t be back until [date] after getting my fill of grandma’s famous casserole and beer for winter or whatever. While I’m away, I’ll be occasionally signing on. Otherwise, I’ll return your message as soon as possible. Have a greet day.
If need a response right away, please reach out to [name] at [email]. They’ll be happy to assist you.
And another (significantly better, in my opinion) at the other end of the spectrum:
It’s the most wonderful tine… to be out of the office. And I am! How about that.
But it looks like you’re not. Because you’re emailing me. Bummer.
Back to me: I’m away until [date] for winter or whatever and will be occasionally signing on. But if your matter is urgent to the pint where you’re debating contacting local authorities, then you can post your on social using #interruptingyourvacation. I’ll find it somehow. After setting a new on my daily intake cf granddma’s famous casserole and beer before I return.
If you need a more way of getting a response, [name] will be happy to assist you (at least, I think they You can reach them at [email]).
If you’re looking for a way to spice up your own OOO in the coming weeks it could be just what your inbox is looking for.
